Quarreled Projections

In the same spirit, quarreled projections applies a similar logic by establishing grids based on ideal but potentially opposite Living Experiences. The lower grid is based on the unit of a New York City pocket park. Specifically Paley Park on Manhattan’s lower east-side at a dimension of 52’x128’. This unit was selected as it performs as an ideal or championed green space of urban living. The courtyards are then aligned with two story 1200sf townhomes. This is then deployed across the site to create a network of different parks. Corners are then filled, and some units are subtracted to create passageways to move through this network. The second grid is based on the unit of a typical Los Angeles residential lot of 50’ x 130’. While greenspace of NY is the urban park, greenspace of LA is often considered to be the private lot. This grid’s rotation is based on the longest continuous line across the site. Sitting on these lots you will find 800 and 400 sf units that aggregate in similar scale to the contemporary presence of a house, garage and ADU. Circulation is defined by streets as the primary artery, and sidewalks leading to the front door. A series of staircases lead from the street to the rooftops of the units creating an occupiable roofscape.

The grids established are then intervened with formal maneuvers of a housing cube of studio apartments as a signal and gateway to the project, a pool, vertical circulation as visible towers, and an observation platform. The observation platform is an extension of the surrounding context and population. It is only accessible to those situated outside of the site giving a sense of ownership back to the surrounding community. The observation platform begins at the community center at the northwest corner of the site. As the pathway progresses the public is given access to rooftops containing small, contemplative gardens.

Furthermore, the materiality chosen reinforces both the horizontal and projective position of the project. The continuous metallic gasket helps bounce light to the lower levels, the pink stucco established the upper grid as a distinct world from the lower. subsequently, both the materiality and interventions of follies attempt to destigmatize the often austere nature of the mat building and grid.
